tanks Continued from page 30 determine what Killington would need for a years worth of propane storage Because the Peak is a new lodge at the resort project officials had to forecast propane demand The consulting engineers determined the resort would burn 32000 gallons in an eight month period Shands says he does not know exactly how much propane the building consumes for a typical eight month season because the lodge did not open until late December already several months in But as of June Peak Lodge had used about 50 percent of the propane in the tanks Shands says Under a normal year we might have been open longer he says We certainly would have had more of a heating load The expectation is that sometime in the summer well fill it up and get a real sense of how much the building uses Why propane The decision to use propane may seem like an interesting choice due to the logistics of hauling it up the side of a mountain Shands says filling the tanks wont be a problem though Keyser Energy delivered about 39000 gallons to two of these tanks During the summer we can get a truck up there to resupply and deal with any issues that we have he says The building that once stood at Killingtons highest peak was built in the 1970s at a time when electric heat was popular Shands says but the company decided it was time for something new The new Peak Lodge is a restaurant that is used practically all year for skiers in the winter and bikers in the summer Special events such as weddings also can be held there Propane was the logical choice because natural gas is not available in the area the Vermont Energy Code does not allow electric resistance heating and oil is problematic Shands says Weve transitioned from oil to propane in many locations mainly because its more efficient and leaves less of a carbon footprint he says Killington Resort takes a hands on approach to its propane energy source and owns the two newly installed propane tanks We prefer to use propane because we can deal with the maintenance and repairs in house Shands says With all the kitchen equipment being propane why not So far Peak Lodge has not experienced any propane supply issues and use is trending very well The system has been working great Shands says Its a comfortable building LPG Propane now heats the new lodge and its restaurants kitchen equipment 32 LPGas July 2014 www LPGasmagazine com
